Why Career Coaching is important to me

Over the last 11 years my coaching clients have been managers, business owners, sales professionals, and people in transition, including career transition. The coaching relationship is one of collaboration in a process of expanding the client’s options, and focusing their actions to achieve results. The context of coaching has often been around leadership, communication, and personal effectiveness.

After September 11, 2001 unemployment was a huge issue that I felt called to address as a coach. I was invited to speak to a Roundtable Networking group of C-level executives in Dallas. After our first session together, the group asked me to continue to support them in their job search and I did that for over a year. We addressed technical job search skills, but more importantly I coached each individual to get them back to work.

As I became more involved in career coaching I discovered that there was nothing similar in Fort Worth to serve the needs of professionals and degreed people in career transition. The Texas Workforce Career Centers was, and is still providing networking and job search support the very basic level. Management and professional level job seekers had to go to Dallas or the Mid-Cities to take advantage of meaningful programs.

I approached First Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth as a member with a mission. Together with six other interested members, we launched the Professional Career Network. This program consisted of a 3-hour meeting every Monday evening that started with a presentation by volunteer speakers from the community, resume reviews, and a chance to network and learn from others. The feedback and participation was such that the PCN continued successfully for nearly two years.

Here are a few things I learned from that experience:

  1. Losing your job is traumatic
  2. Job loss affects every aspect of a person’s life
  3. Knowing how to conduct a job search is only part of the solution
  4. Fear drives strategies and activities that are not focused
  5. Coaching changes perspectives and behaviors - you get the best job faster
